The Unistellar Odyssey Pro is a premium smart telescope from French manufacturer Unistellar that is brand new in 2024.

There are three reasons to consider it over the eVscope 2:

  1. It is cheaper
  2. It will not require collimation. This makes it easier for casual use as you know you can just pick it up and use it whenever you want.
  3. It is smaller and lighter. This means that you can more easily take it on trips and also that it packs up much more easily for home storage.

In short, it is the more convenient device, especially if you might be put off by the prospect of having to collimate it.

I think the collimation issue is why Unistellar released this model (along with the Odyssey – which is virtually the same as the Pro, just minus the eyepiece).

The eVscope 2 and eQuinox 2 were in competition with models from other manufacturers where no collimation was required and this was deterring a section of the potential buyers.

Unistellar eVscope 2 vs Odyssey Pro: Verdict

Both these smart telescopes are excellent and have Unistellar’s slick UX and offer the chance to take part in Citizen Astronomy initiatives.

If you are looking at either of these models then you are probably looking for the best there is regardless of the cost.

The key difference is the ease of use:

  • If you want the more powerful model and don’t think you’d mind the need to collimate the telescope, then the eVscope 2 is for you.
  • If you would prefer a model that you use casually without having to think about collimation then the Odyssey Pro is for you.

Whilst collimation is not difficult (there are simple tutorials on YouTube or Unistellar’s site to follow) it will likely put you off if this is not something you have done before, especially since the appeal of smart telescopes is that you want them to work seamlessly out the box and not need any astronomy experience.
