Learn how Israeli astrophotographer Roi Levi takes photos like these:

Where are you and what’s your astrophotography focus?

I’m currently in Israel. I spend my time between here and the USA after getting an artists visa to teach astrophotography in the United States.

I host astrophotography workshops worldwide and just came back from one in La Palma, Spain.

In August, I’m guiding a Utah and New Mexico tour and in September and an aurora photo tour in Iceland.

My current focus is on teaching how to shoot DSO Timelapse and Milky Way Tracked Panoramas with star trackers and DIY gear I built.

What gear do you use?

I work with Sony, Canon and Nikon cameras as I feel I need to know all types in order to teach my students.

I use:

All these cameras are astro-modified.

I’m also a brand ambassador for ZWO astronomical cameras.

All my lenses are Sigma models (and I’m sponsored by Sigma).

My other sponsors are Sunwayfoto, Focus on Stars, Silence Corner, LRTimelapse, Haida, Askar, Optolong, FstopGear , Eos4Astro, Spencers Camera.

What do you do use for post-processing?

I use Pixinsight and Photoshop.

What are your tips for others?

My best advice for learning DSO online is to spend time on the Cloudy Nights forum.

On YouTube, I recommend Alyn Wallace’s channel (RIP Alyn).

Royce Bair’s book should give you most of what you need with regards to nightscapes.

I also do private tutorials.

What are your proudest moments in astrophotography?

My proudest moments include:

  • Winning Nightscaper awards in 2023 and 2024.
  • Holding a private exhibition of 34 of my pictures in Dead Sea, Israel.
  • Published by National Geographic, NASA, European Space Agency, PetaPixel, DIY Photography.
  • Product tester for leading innovation companies that allow me to test new gear on the road and show my students how to properly use this in epic places in photography workshops around the world. I’m a part of ZWO Dream that develops, designs and tests the ASIAIR features.
  • Working with Austin Astronomical Society teaching DSO photography for 10 students with big scopes under Texas dark skies hunting galaxies and nebulae.
  • Documenting a G2- G3 Storm in Iceland during geomagnetic storm during photography workshop
  • Granted an Artist Visa with exceptional abilities from the USA.
